What Makes It Special?

This hill is home to the remains of pre-Hispanic temples and structures where the Mexica people performed the great Rite of the New Fire every 52 years, believing that the world could be reborn… or come to an end. The site offers not only archaeological significance but also a breathtaking view of the eastern part of the city.

At the summit lie the remains of a Mexica shrine where the New Fire was lit, a key ceremony to ensure the sun’s continued existence. It was believed that the universe could be reset every 52-year cycle, which is why this was one of the most important rituals in the Mexica worldview.

Don’t Miss

The climb can be challenging, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and wear a hat. Halfway up, you’ll find overlooks, and at the top, archaeological ruins and a view that makes every step worthwhile. Avoid the hottest part of the day, and consider hiring a guide if you’d like to learn more about the site’s significance.

How to Get There

Cerro de la Estrella (Green Line 8) – 20-minute walk and climb

From Downtown/North: Take Eje Central or Tlalpan south until you reach Eje 6 Sur (Trabajadores Sociales) or Eje 8 Sur (Ermita Iztapalapa), heading east. Look for the entrance to Cerro de la Estrella National Park on Morelos Street or Camino Escénico. You can drive up to a parking area near the summit, but the last few meters to the main temple are on foot along a paved path.

An important Mexica ritual site. The climb is steep but offers panoramic views. Best visited during the dry season.
