Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso

The birthplace of Mexican muralism and an architectural gem of the Historic District

AREA

What Makes It Special?

This majestic Baroque building was one of the leading Jesuit colleges in New Spain and later served as the headquarters of the National University. Today it houses temporary exhibitions and boasts some of the most beautiful architecture in downtown.

Did You Know…?

This is where muralists such as Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros began their careers. Several of their murals still remain in the building’s hallways and stairwells, creating a perfect dialogue with the contemporary exhibitions.

Don’t Miss

Be sure to arrive early so you can explore its monumental courtyards and admire the architectural details. If there’s a temporary exhibition, it’s well worth seeing; they’re usually large-scale and of international caliber.
