What Makes It Special?

This site preserves traces of one of the oldest human settlements in the Valley of Mexico. Stone tools and skeletal remains dating back as far as 20,000 years have been found on its slopes, making it a key site for understanding the early presence of humans in the Americas.

Did You Know…?

The name “Tlapacoya” means “place of red earth” and refers both to the archaeological site and to Cerro del Elefante, so named for its distinctive shape. Although it has not yet been fully excavated or opened to the public like other sites, its scientific importance has been recognized for decades.

Don’t Miss

This site isn't developed as a traditional tourist destination, but you can see the hill from certain vantage points on the eastern side of the city. If you visit the area, please respect the environment and keep in mind that much of it is located within residential neighborhoods.

How to Get There

Santa Martha Metro Station (Line A) + public transportation (Route 36) heading toward Ayotla/Buenaventura.

Waterfall – 10-minute walk

Take the Mexico-Puebla highway. When you reach Ayotla, follow the signs to the Santa Cruz Tlapacoya neighborhood until you reach Cerrada del Silencio Street.

Poor signage and difficult access. Best visited with a guide or prior knowledge of the site.
