El Tepozteco Archaeological Zone

Where the mountain shelters a temple from the wind and the elements

AREA

What Makes It Special?

Located within the national park, it features a pre-Hispanic temple dedicated to Ometochtli-Tepoztēcatl, the god of pulque, fertility, and the wind. Perched atop a mountain, the ascent becomes a spiritual journey through rocky cliffs, birds, cacti, and living legends.

Did You Know…?

The temple was built by the Mexica to worship a local deity highly revered by the peoples of central Mexico. From the summit, one can overlook the valleys of Tepoztlán and take in the landscape, which, according to tradition, holds powerful and healing energy.

Don’t Miss

Bring water, sturdy shoes, and be prepared for a hike of about 60 to 90 minutes. Admission to the park is free, but there is a small fee to enter the archaeological site. Avoid weekends if you’re looking for a more contemplative experience.
