El Carmen Museum

Sacred art, the quiet of the convent… and the mystery of the mummies that have stood the test of time

AREA

What Makes It Special?

Housed in a former 17th-century Carmelite convent, this museum houses an important collection of religious and colonial art, but it is also famous for something more unsettling: its mummies.

Did You Know…?

During a renovation of the lower cloister, several naturally mummified bodies were discovered. Today they are on display in a special room, alongside colonial paintings, sculptures, and impressive altarpieces.

Don’t Miss

Take the opportunity to explore its gardens, quiet corridors, and chapels. It is one of the few museums in the city where time seems to stand still. Ideal for a contemplative visit.
