What Makes It Special?

Xochicalco, which in Nahuatl means “Place of the House of Flowers,” was a powerful fortified city built on the hills of what is now the state of Morelos. It is famous for its impressive Pyramid of Quetzalcóatl, decorated with finely carved reliefs, and for its underground observatory, which was used to study the movement of the Sun.

Did You Know…?

Xochicalco flourished after the fall of Teotihuacán and before the height of the Mexica civilization, around 650–900 AD. It was a key center of trade and Mesoamerican astronomical knowledge. Its observatory is a modified natural cavity where a ray of sunlight enters only on certain dates of the year, marking sacred calendar events.

Don’t Miss

Although it’s a two-hour drive from Mexico City, Xochicalco is perfect for a day trip. Be sure to visit the on-site museum, which explains life in this city and its sophisticated system of terraces, plazas, and canals. Bring a hat and sunscreen: the sun in Morelos is strong.

How to Get There

From Mexico City: Take a bus to Cuernavaca (from Tapo or Taxqueña), then take a taxi or private tour to Xochicalco (~1 hour from Cuernavaca). In Cuernavaca, head to the "Mi Bus" terminal (near the market) or ask for buses heading to Coatlán del Río or Miacatlán; get off at the turnoff for Xochicalco

Take the Autopista del Sol (Mexico City–Acapulco). Turn off: Take the exit toward Alpuyeca. Follow the signs to Miacatlán, and after about 8 km, you’ll see the right turn that leads 4 km directly to the archaeological site.
